Parents Living Apart But Not Legally Separated

I hope this is the right forum.

My parents have lived apart for about 20 years but never got legally separated or divorced. My father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and my brother has gotten Power of Attorney for my father's finances. My mom wants to know where she stands in this situation. Does she still have legal rights in regards to my father's property, finances, etc.? When my father dies, if my mom is still alive, will his property, etc. go to her or will we have to go through a will reading or does my brother's POA come into play? This is all based out of the state of Virginia. Hope this makes sense to someone. THanks.

She's still his spouse, so she still stands to inherit as his spouse. A power of attorney doesn't change the terms of a will.
