Default Radar detector law in Canada

When I was driving through Cornwall ON the other day, I was pulled over and the police officer immediately confinscated my radar detector. I know it is legal in NewYork State but illegal with hefty fines in Canada. I know how the laws are in the states, but i am very unsure about the ones in Canada. Knowing it was illegal I had it turned off, becuase when traveling to Canada you do have to dismember your car if something is illegal there and legal in the states. It is like tinted windows. If they are legal in Canada and you drive in to the states, the cops can cite you for that or smash your windows out. It does not make full sense too me .He gave me a $170 dollar fine just for having it in my car and took it from me where I cannot get it back. I really would appreciate if someone would assist me with some detailed knowledge about this issue. Thank you

The officer gave you all the detailed knowledge that you need. It is illegal with a hefty fine and they can take the detector. Seems like you knew this so why didn't you put it in the trunk?
