Does an Answer to a an Unlawful Detainer Filing Limit What You Can Present in Court

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California

Tenants filed an answer to a(n) UD filing and someone has offered to cover their lawyers fees. Does what they put in their answer limit what their lawyer can present in the case?

That will depend upon such factors as what they put in their answer, what they intend to present in court and its relevance to the complaint and answer and, if it's not, whether they successfully amend their answer so as to make it relevant.

I assume the answer would have to be amended before the case starts and if something comes up during the case it would be too late or someone would have to ask for, what are they called, continuances or something?

Whether or not a complaint or answer can be amended at trial to conform to the facts is something that would have to be addressed in context.
