Default Consequences of Failure to Return Tags to the DMV

My question involves insurance law for the state of: VA

Since Vw emissions scandal, I returned my Jetta. Then reported to DMV car is sold. I then canceled insurance. I never turned in the tags to the DMV. I should have them somewhere but cannot find them at the moment. Since then, I registered a few cars with no issues.

Will they ever come back ask for the plates? What are the implications of not having them?

    Thank you.

There is NO requirement to return plates to the DMV in Virginia. They will take them for recycling purposes, but you are free to destroy them yourself (or hang them in your man cave if you like). The only thing you should not do is leave them on the car you sold (or put them on another car). You did everythign fine.

Turning them in is not necessary in Virginia.
