Default Asking for Reasonable Attorney's Fees As a Tenant in an Eviction Action

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California

I've read some places that if you are answering an Unlawful Detainer complaint that you take on additional risk if you ask for reasonable attorney's fees in your answer. Is this true? If so, what are the risks? I've read that it opens you up to having to pay additional fees to the landlord if you fail to prove your case.

If you have an attorney, your attorney will gauge whether it is appropriate to petition for an award of attorney fees.

If you do not have an attorney, there is no point in requesting attorney fees as you won't have any.
