    You did not tell us your state. Some jurisdictions have diversion programs that allow first-time offenders to complete certain conditions and then the charges are dropped. Things like taking a retail theft class, community service, a reality check program for youthful offenders, etc. You would do well to consult an attorney to explore the possibilities in your specific county. If you can't afford a lawyer the court will appoint one. This can affect your entire future, so you need to be very careful in how you proceed. You need an attorney much more than you realize. And hopefully you've learned that there's nothing in the bookstore, Walmart, Target, or any other store that is worth ruining your life over.
