Default Can You Be Required to Register as a Sex Offender After Moving Out-of-State

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Wisconsin

I am a lifetime registered sex offender in Wisconsin. I did my time and have been off parole for a bit now. I recently moved to Ohio and registered there. A few days ago I received a letter from Wisconsin stating that I still need to register there. How can I still be held under Wisconsin law if I don't live there?

It can be required of you because you were convicted in Wisconsin, and that's what Wisconsin law requires. It's just like why Wisconsin can maintain a criminal record of your conviction even after you move, or why if you were still on probation or parole you would need permission to move and to complete your sentence in another state.

    18 U.S.C. § 2250- Failure to register

Section 2250 of Title 18, United States Code, makes it a federal offense for sex offenders required to register pursuant to the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), to knowing fail to register or update a registration as required. State convicted sex offenders may also be prosecuted under this statute if the sex offender knowingly fails to register or update a registration as required, and engages in interstate travel, foreign travel, or enters, leaves, or resides on an Indian reservation.

A sex offender who fails to properly register may face fines and up to 10 years in prison. Furthermore, if a sex offender knowingly fails to update or register as required and commits a violent federal crime, he or she may face up to 30 years in prison under this statute.

Ohio requires you to deregister from Wisconsin first and this is from the attorney general of Ohio. You were supposed to apply to get off the Wisconsin registry if possible before moving and should have checked with someone before doing so do your homework first so you don't get into trouble
