Default Criminal Charges Following an Exchange of Gunfire

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California (Los Angeles)

My friend has been in jail for almost three years now and has been fighting for his freedom. He hasn't been getting any good representation that really cares for him due to financial difficulties. The incident was that he was coming from his security job walking up the stairs of his apartment when a couple people in a car pulled up in the parking lot and started shooting at him and to his defense shot back and shot one of the people. The person lived. Those people had threatened him before prior to the incident and now he is the one in jail for it. Hopefully someone would be able to help him. He's a good man and doesn't deserve to be in there. He has already lost his mother while in there due to an unresolved hit-and-run while visiting him in jail

It would seem that the District Attorney does not believe the act was in self defense, so the scenario is likely a wee bit more involved than your short explanation makes it out to be.

There is not a lot anyone on these boards can do for your friend. Presumably he has an attorney appointed by the court to assist him in his defense. That attorney might not be too keen on your posting what could be important details about the case on the internet.

You can help your friend by assisting him with raising money for his defense, if that is needed. Other than that, you can offer moral support. But, no magic pill is going to materialize on the internet from people who are entirely unfamiliar with the case or the parties involved.

He can always file a demand for a speedy trial if he wants his case heard sooner rather than later.

Of course, the charges could be something over and above just that he shot back at the group.

You only know what he has told you. It is doubtful what he has told you is the complete truth.

Do you know what his charges are?
Did he have a permit to carry?
