    Default Employment Offer Letter

    Hi,

I was just offered employment at a company that I'd like to work for. The HR director emailed me a written agreement that I am to sign and return to her on my first day of work, Monday April 9, 2007. The letter states terms of my compensation, benefits etc. It is not a contract. It states that my employment will be at will and can be terminated by either myself or the company at any time and for any reason. At the end of the letter the following is stated . . .

"This offer and all terms of employment stated in this letter will expire ten days from the date of this letter."

The letter is dated April 4, 2007.

As I understand it, the statement above completely voids all of the terms of the agreement after the 14th of April 2007. This means that my potential future employer could change any terms of the agreement any time after that.

    Is this correct?

If so, is there any law which states that the employer must notify me if any significant changes are made with regard to my wage benefits etc.?

I am a California resident and the company that sent me the offer letter is a California based wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon.com.

    Thank you,

    Boekventer

I hesitate to comment on the terms of an agreement I have not read. Isolated phrases taken out of context are not sufficient.

My take on the phrase you provided is, sign within 10 days or we'll offer the job to someone else. But you're going to have to show the letter to an attorney in your state to get a definite reading. The devil is in the details.
