My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois
So I am 20 years and yesterday I got caught stealing from Walmart about 55-58 dollars worth of stuff and yes I’m ashamed of myself I can’t believe i did such a dumb thing I didn’t even make it out the doors I went past the detectors and they didn’t go off the guy approached me quietly and and asked if I wanted to deal with it the hard way or easy way I knew I was caught at that point and I did what he asked me to do I was scared because I had never been caught before.
The guy asked for my social security and drivers lisences and wrote it down on a form he said that I needed to empty my bag which I did and I gave him all the stuff I took non of the things were damaged or even attempted to open after that he called in a lady to ring up all of the items I had taken and said that if it’s more than $25 he has to call the police. He really didn’t want to but he had to. He was a really nice guy.
So he calls them and then he says honestly they probably won’t come and if they don’t come I’ll let you go within an hour so we wait he takes a picture of me in the mean time and also has me sign a paper stating what he told me and that I should expect a letter from civil demands and there I will have to pay a fee, if I can’t afford this fee I can do payment plans but he said majority of the time people don’t even receive this letter. So about 40 minutes of waiting he calls the police to see if they were pretty busy and if they were he would let me go so he calls and they tell him yes so he lets me go.
I was relived but not for long I started stressing out really bad and I still am I know that they can still send the information to the police and I can still go to court but what are my chances that Walmart will still file a report? He mentioned something about a misdemeanor is that bad and how long will it stay on my record I’m just thinking the worst I’m very impatient and I just wanna know what’s going to happen to me it’s literally making me sick to my stomach
