Default Where to Register a Car if Co-Owners Live in Two States

My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: PA and TX
We have a car with two family members listed as owners. The car is financed and registered in PA. The main driver wants to move to TX and establish residency. Will the car need to be retitled? Will it need to be registered in TX or can we continue to register it in PA? Will it need to carry TX insurance or will the PA insurance cover it?

No. Texas does not require the car to be titled in Texas.

Yes. It needs to be inspected and registered in TX within 30 days of moving to TX.

    Yes.

The main driver will need an insurance policy issued by a TX insurance company. Minimum liability limits are 30,000/60,000/25,000. The main driver will have to have the insurance in effect for the registration process.

Make sure both owners are on the policy as Named Insured.

Here's the TX DMV website where I got the above information.

Oh, I suggest you thoroughly and carefully read the loan contract. They sometimes have provisions preventing the car from being removed from the state. See if that's something you have to deal with. If it's in there it will be in the fine print.

Strange that Texas will register a car with an out-of-state title without requiring a switch to a Texas title. Never heard of that before.

Surprised me, too. But it's right there on the DMV website I posted the link to.
