Default Is a Garbage Collection Fee Required for Vacant Property

My question involves real estate located in the State of: PA

I own a property and home in a small community (5,500 residents). I recebtly moved but still maintain ownership. The house is vacant.

Borough is requiring me to pay over $300 for garbage and recycling. I cannot find anything in our local ordinances requiring vacant property owners to pay for trash removal services. Borough simply states all properties in the Borough are required to pay for trash services. Can't find that requirement in the local ordinances.

Obviously I have no need for trash or recycling collection services. Any way i can avoid paying for a service i dont need? Thanks.

You also won't find any thing in the ordinances that prohibits the borough from charging the fee for all properties, vacant or otherwise.

Sure. Sell the house as quickly as possible.

    Otherwise, probably not.

All of us pay for services we don't need.

My water bill includes sewer and I'm on septic.

My property tax pays for schools and I have no kids in school.

And I, personally, have no need for a bridge in Alaska. Yet my income tax paid for that, too (before federal funding was cut off).

Ok thanks. Guess I'll pay it, cancel the garbage service where I'm at now (which is not required by the township) and take all my garbage to the old house to dispose of. ;-)

You come here to try and save yourself some money and in the long run, you're going to cost yourself more money. Not only do you still have to pay the $300 fee for garbage disposal, now you'll have to pay for gas in your vehicle to get your garbage disposed of. Brilliant idea.
