My question involves criminal law for the state of: michigan. My boyfriend got caught shoplifting and is being charged with retail fraud (misdemeanor). He was never arrested (even though the paperwork he was given at court says so) and this is his first offense. His plea was not guilty in the attempt of not jeopardizing any of his rights but he also knows we can't afford a lawyer, not even a court appointed one, so he will be representing himself. Given that its his first offense and he has a clean record what is the likely hood of him getting jail time and What can be expected when he meets with the prosecutor. He's never done anything like this he just had a momentary lapse in judgment as stupid as that sounds and he knows he made a mistake. If anyone has any advice that may help I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
