Default Getting Caught After Stealing from a Store

So I have a question for a relative. She went into a retail store and stole a few cheap items and never got caught. However she frequently goes back to the same store and shops. She then went back one day and a employee was watching her. Then the next time she went back the same employee followed her and got another employee and they were wathing her and talking she said.

Question is can they charge her after the fact and what is the percentage they would? Do you think they caught it on camera? Can something happen to her now? Can they use face recognition to find out who she is and where she lives?

    Yes.

and what is the percentage they would?
There's a guy named Jimmy the Greek in Las Vegas that quotes odds on everything.

Do you think they caught it on camera?
Stores have cameras all over the place. My guess is yes.

Can something happen to her now?
Lots of things can happen to her. Wouldn't do any good to list them all.

Can they use face recognition to find out who she is and where she lives?
You've been watching too much TV. But yeah, theoretically, I suppose so.

Jimmy “the Greek” Snyder died in 1996. So he’s no longer making odds in Vegas. Maybe he’s making book in hell though :-)

    Tell relative to:

    1. Stop stealing.
    2. Stay out of the store she has a history with.

They can charge her after the fact, as there is most likely video surveillance. First off, she needs to stop stealing from stores, and she will eventually get caught one way or another if she keeps stealing. The employee(s) were following her around to see if she stole again, altohough they did not call the cops on her and present the video surveillance after seeing her back in the store which they could have done.

So, if she stays out of the store permanently, it seems likely that they won't actually file charges on her. However, they could in theory, and this is by no means a guarantee. Though, if she stays out of the store and doesn't get charged with anything in the near future, it seems incredibly unlikely that the shop owner would suddenly decide to press charges on her months after seeing her in the store.

If she continues to go back there to shop, I think she will most likely get arrested. They presumably already have the theft caught on tape, which is why the employees were keeping their eye on her. Since the employees would most likely be irritated with having to follow her around the store, it's likely that the shop owner would decide to press charges as to not be burdened with having people follow her around the store.

As for whether they'd know where she lives, maybe, maybe not. They would have surveillance footage, which would allow police to ID her. This could effectively be the same as knowing where she lives and her name. However, if she ever purchased alcohol, tobacco, or lotto tickets from the store, they would could know her full name and address from when they scan/check her ID. However, if the store owner chooses to show the surveillance footage to the police, assuming she lives in the same state/region of the country where this occurred, they would identify her at some point and arrest her for the theft.

I don't know if there is "face recognition software that identifies who you are and where you live". If such a thing does exist, I sincerely doubt that it is being used to track down petty shoplifters and such advanced technology would likely only be used to solve crimes of a very serious nature, if such technology even exists at all. Though, that likely makes little difference as her face is most likely on surveillance footage and could be shown to law enforcement at the store's discretion. If she keeps returning to the store after people were following her around, I think it's highly probable that the store will report her to law enforcement and have her arrested on the spot.
