Default 17-Year-Old Charged as an Adult for Shoplifting on a Military Base

My question involves criminal law for the state of: UT
I had not reason to do it, I had the money for the items. I regret my actions tremendously, I am currently being charge with reatail theft/petty theft. it was under $100 so i didnt need to be finger printed it was 71.91 to be exact. I am 17 but and being charged as an adult, I have never had any trouble with the law. Being handcuffed and patted down has honeslty scared me straight. I know I did wrong and I know I have to pay the for the crime. I am currently finshing my high school degree and taking mainly CT classes (Conncurrent Enrollment) and just got accepted into the college Ive want to go to. I have to go to federal court because it happened on base. Ive always tried to do my best and I am so regretful. I chose not to make a statement since my legal gardian advised itd be best to get a lawyer. Is there a posible way to make it so this does not go on my record and will this affect my college acceptance? I will seriously do anything. Will I really go to jail for this?

Stop talking to anybody else about this (including your parents) other than your attorney.

Your guardian gave you the right advice: get an attorney. And I suggest you get a job so you can pay back whomever it is who will be paying for said attorney.

As to your college acceptance? it can affect your acceptance, but that depends on many factors. Including how your case is resolved, and what college you plan to attend.

To answer your specific question, it would be extremely unlikely for you to go to jail for a 1st time petit theft.
