Employee Caught Stealing

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Virginia, I was an employee at Walmart until I was caught stealing. I received a call from asset protection tellling me to come in to talk about it and that no criminal charges will be brought against me but I’ll have to pay Walmart back. Any steps or tips I should take?

Start looking for a new job. A job with a retail store (especially a larger one that subscribes to the NRTD) is likely out of the question.

In your shoes I would consult a local criminal defense attorney prior to making any agreement to talk to loss prevention. Chances are that talking to loss prevention at this point is simply not in your benefit. The employer doesn’t need to talk to you to pursue payment. It may sue you if it wants that. Would talking to the store and making an agreement to repay stop the store from making a criminal complaint? Perhaps, but before you take the word of the store on that I suggest you find out from a defense attorney how likely it is that meeting with loss prevention will make a difference in that.
