Default What Happens if a Paternity Test is Positive

My question involves paternity law for the State of: Tennessee. I recently received an order of parentage through my districts child support office for a 15 month old boy that I had no idea about. I haven't seen or heard from the mother of this child in almost 2 years. Needless to say I'm shaken up by this. I'm not swimming in money so I decided to wait for the outcome of the test to speak with an attorney. The lady at the support office when I went to do the test said 2-6 weeks for results so I figured I'd come here in hopes of answers to a couple questions. That said if the test comes back positive, what can I expect next in the process? I was told there would be a hearing scheduled. Will l be given adequate time to hire an attorney before it happens?

If you're the child's father, you will be ordered to pay support consistent with your state's child support formula. You may seek visitation and, if appropriate, custody.

If you want to hire a lawyer, it makes sense to interview some lawyers now and get back to them when you learn the DNA results and learn the hearing date.

I agree with this but I will tell you that child support orders are pretty cut and dry and you might not want to spend the money on an attorney for that if your income simply comes from wages. (nothing complicated about your income).

You might want to save your legal bucks to use for an attorney to file for partial custody and parenting time.

Many states have a child support calculator online. You may want to look there to have an idea of what you could be looking at as far as a child support obligation.

I make 2200/month and already pay 386 a month for my daughter who I have 50/50 shared custody of. Based on that experience I have drawn the conclusion I'm going to be bankrupt after this due to 40%+ of my income going to my kids mothers.

Then you should take steps to be sure that you don't have any more children.
