You can refuse to show your ID -- but if the Border Patrol has probable cause to detain you, showing your ID may be the fastest way to dispel their incorrect conclusion that you're unlawfully present in the U.S.

Also, they can ask questions that you don't have to answer, and ask for ID even before you have a duty to produce it, without violating your rights. If there is no legitimate reason for a Border Patrol officer to detain you at a checkpoint, but they're insisting upon seeing your ID before allowing you to proceed, you can ask to speak to the supervisor.

I think at the US border id needs to be shown to get back int the US. But at an immigration checkpoint inside the US do I need to show ID if I'm driving a motor vehicle?

There is law that at least the ACLU doesn't much like that gives the Border Patrol additional powers within 100 miles of the border.

    Here's the C & BP take on it https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/det...-border-patrol

    And here's the ACLU's https://www.aclu.org/other/constitut...le-border-zone
