Yesterday I was arrested for shoplifting. I am 22-years-old and a college senior. This was the first time I have ever stolen anything and I am incredibly ashamed and upset about what I did. I was at JCPenny's and put two pairs of pants and a pair of sunglasses in my bag. The estimated total of these items was $112.00.
I was apprehended by the loss prevention officer as I left the building. She showed me her card and asked me to come with her, and she escorted me to an office at the back of the store. I returned what was in my bag and apologized profusely. I then had my picture taken along with a picture of the items and then the LP completed paperwork. A city police officer came about 45 minutes after I was apprehended. He told me what was going to happen and then escorted me to his car. I was not handcuffed or read my Miranda Rights. After arriving at the sherriff's department I was fingerprinted, photographed, and given a citation with a court date in which i must appear.
I am an Indiana resident, but all of this happened in Arkansas, where I am attending college. The officer informed me that I would probably receive probation, a fine, and possibly community service. I plan on pleading guilty, but I may consult with a criminal defense lawyer to make sure I am proceeding the proper way. My question is, are there diversion programs available to individuals with a case such as mine? I am getting ready to graduate from college in 3 months, and I don't want this mistake to haunt me for the rest of my life. This was a class A misdemeanor. Does anyone have any advice for me?
