Default What Will Happen if You Don't Pay a Fine or Take a Shoplifting Course

My question involves criminal law for the state of: illinois. I was accused for shoplifting at Wal-Mart in chicago. They stopped me at the front door before i went outside and took me to the side room and asked me questions and gave me the option to pay $400 now, to do an 8 hour CEC course and $500 over time, or to contact the police. The only proof I saw was pictures on their desk. But no camera footage. Im wondering if i shohld pay the $500 and do the course or what i should do. Also the amount that was taken was I think less than $50.

I'm not sure what I signed I think it was just something stating that I watched the video for the CEC course and that I'm going to take it.

My money is on the fact that you signed a confession (you were foolish to sign anything without at least knowing what it was and that's a general life rule).

You can do what you want, just be willing to accept the consequences. They can still charge you and then you get a criminal conviction (see above).

The disconnect that shoplifters have between the value of the property stolen and the costs of dealing with it, in the form of LP wages, security cameras, shrink, etc, is odd to me. It's a profound lack of understanding of the ramifications of their actions, the idea of 2nd and 3rd order consequences, like ripples on a pond with the shoplifting action being the initiating event, and the manner in which they impose on everyone else around them. I'll give you a starker example: my teenaged daughter believes that the multiple differences in rules and standards that I have for her and had for her now 19 year old sister is completely unfair because, when she breaks the rules and insists that there is some sort of inconsistency, therefore her mother and I must tolerate this other thing we must now ban all actions that are similar thereby removing the chance of us acting on our own discretion.

By shoplifting you impose the black and white conditions that must be enforced. Security cameras, LP personnel, distrustful employees, etc. In other words things get pretty black and white with a bright and sharp terminator betwixt the two. If you choose to not comply with the terms of restitution and education you'll find increasingly stark choices eventually leading to conviction and, possibly in the future, incarceration. The amount that you stole will become increasingly meaningless as you progress through this process.

If you signed a confession, you have made your life a lot more difficult if they pass your case along to the police. As you have no clue what you signed, you should be prepared for the possibility that you did sign a confession.

A store should not be telling you, "You must pay this fine or we'll prosecute"; the offer of largesse should be independent of any possible prosecution. But whatever may have happened, and whatever you can prove about what happened, you need to decide for yourself whether it's worth facing a possible criminal prosecution in the event that you don't live up to your promises.
