    Default Changing Your Full Name

My question involves name change laws in the State of: Tennessee or New York

Hey so I currently want to change my full name. I currently live in New York and will be graduating college soon and want to move to Tennessee. I don't have a criminal record or trying to change my name for any illegally reasons. I want to change my name for personal reasons but cannot inform family of me changing my name.

Basically I would be starting over in a new state, so new name, license, registration, etc. I do not know if I should change my name first once I move out of state. Or move down first with my legal name and then months later change after settling down.

Is it even possible to change my name in New York first without the ones I live with knowing? What is the best solution for someone like me who wants to start over. To start a new life but not cause awareness to the old one that I will be leaving behind.

If there is any advice or guidelines someone has to in completely starting over with a new name please tell me. I have been researching but there is little information on changing my name when you are a resident of one state but want to change your name legally in another state.

You refer to graduating college so presumably you are an adult and don't need anybody's permission to change your name.

I can't fathom why you'd want to hide the change from the people you live with, but that's certainly your prerogative although the name change will be public record at the courthouse.

I don't know what your concern is there. Once you get the court order from NY (if you do it in NY) that court order is accepted in every other state.

As a matter of convenience and less hassle it might be better to do it in NY and then change your driver license, auto title and registration (if any), social security, passport (if any) so that when you get to TN there would be no delays in using your new name.

For example, you would typically be required to get a TN driver license and car registration within a certain amount of time after becoming a resident. If you wait until you get to TN to change your name, the court process may take longer than that time and you could end up getting traffic citations.

That's just one example. There could be others. Or, maybe nothing will ever go wrong. Just too many possibilities.

Bottom line, it's up to you to do what you want to do.

Here's the name change info from NY court:
