Default Is a Landlord Required to Provide a Mailbox

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: California

The property I live on has two other units. Only one of the units is provided with a mailbox. The landlord told us other two units that we need a po box. Are landlords legally required to provide a mailbox for each individual unit? And if she won't, would it be out of line to tell her to deduct the amount of a po box from the rent if she doesn't want to install mailboxes for us too?

I can just about guarantee that the two units that do not have mailboxes are not legal units. That is why he is telling you that you have to have a PO Box, because you do not have a separate legal address.

If you rent a unit in a home with only one mailing address, and are told that the one mailbox is assigned to a different unit, then you accept that you will have to get a P.O. box for your mail, and that you will bear the cost. The postal service does not necessarily recognize additional mailing addresses, even if what was formerly a single family residence has been subdivided into multiple units.

If you choose, you can investigate with the local government whether the division of the property was lawful. If it was, you can inquire with the post office about the possibility that they will issue mailing addresses for the added units and, if so, discuss with your landlord how that process might be completed with mailboxes installed for each unit. I can't promise you that your apartment is (a) lawful, (b) eligible for its own separate mailbox, or (c) even if it is, that your landlord will take the steps to get additional mailboxes that are recognized by the USPS.

Thank you for your responses! She let some things slide, for example, no pet deposit or rent for my cats so Im hesitant to start ''drama'' but I also don't want to be taken advantage of either. thanksagain.
