It's actually a bad idea to rent a room out to your best friend or most trusted relative. More people get screwed by friends and relatives than by strangers. Never let anybody else live in your home but you. Don't even let a girlfriend live with you. Too many sob stories about that on these websites.I understand it was a poor decision to allow someone to rent a room with more personal info or really knowing them first. so please withhold judgment and comments on the level of stupidity that took, i am now the wise for it.
As long as it's not your signature on the receipt I don't see how you can be held responsible. My concern is if this person signed for the package and took it, am or can i be held liable for the missing computer? If they were to push the matter could they "prove" that i somehow am the culprit even though i don't have it in my possession nor did i sign for it?
All I can suggest is you respond to the email with a simple short denial and not get into any discussions.
You can't. In that there is nothing you can do that actually prevents criminal or civil action against you. Unless, of course, you just want to crumble and pay whatever they want you to pay. If not, and something happens, all you can do is raise your defense as best as you can.I'm just trying to figure out how i can protect myself and my family from any type of legal action be it civil or criminal.
Meantime, avoid the urge to explain yourself when somebody accuses you of wrongdoing and if, god forbid, you get contacted by law enforcement, what do we say, class?
"I can't talk to you. I'm calling a lawyer."
Very good, class.
