I lived in a rent stabilized apartment in NYC, where both my roommate and I cosigned a lease. At the end of the lease term, I moved out, and he remained, crossing my name out on the lease renewal. After I moved out, and despite his promises beforehand to the contrary, he refused to pay me my half of the security deposit, saying I'd get it from the management company whenever they refund it.
However, I've talked to the management company, and they won't refund it until he vacates (he just signed a full-year lease), saying he's supposed to refund it to me.
Do I have a legal right to recover it from him, especially since he told me he'd refund it when I moved out?
