Yes, you can insist...you can even sue him and win if he refuses to do it. However, it is going to make for a very bad relationship with your landlord, he likely won't renew the lease at the end of the term and he is likely to play all kinds of games with your deposit. However, he is absolutely bound by the lease, just as you are.
Thank you for the reply. I'd definitely like to avoid a lawsuit over this. I'm trying to work something out and it sounds like we might be able to come to an agreement that I will put the gas in my name and pay it for a reduction in rent equal to the average monthly gas usage (about $40 per month). But it is good to know I have some solid legal ground to stand on here.
