Default Civil Penalty Suit vs. Home Depot - Thought I was done with this...

Ok - I stole from an NYC Home Depot. I was taken to the back and had to get the picture taken and all the other fun Loss Prevention Stuff - but these guys told me I'd be out soon. Next thing I know I'm in the back of a squad car. Sweet.

Anyway I was arraigned the same night after central bookings and was given some community service. I was thinking that after those small criminal charges I was done.

Then I get a letter about a Civil Penalty Claim for like $250. I didn't even bother answering it I just threw it out... I got another one asking for $480.

Why is Home Depot doing this? I was pressed with charges already and thought I corrected this and now they want money?

    Just looking for some advice...

they are doing this because they are charging you civil as well as they pressed charges. THey want money for the time and effort you caused them for stealing from them.

gotcha- so there using the money to pay for LP.

If only I found this site when I got the first letter... I threw it out thinking it was some kind of trash. BAD IDEA it cost me another like $200 lol.

Any idea if calling them for a payment plan actually lowers their price at all?
