    Default Shoplifting Charges

    I need some serious help.

I was just caught shoplifting. I stole from shopko something stupid that came to just under $8.00.

Okay, so they called the cops, and they wrote me a citation, and gave me a court date. They told me that I could get a fine, or possibly probabtion. I really don't want anyone to know that this happened. I feel awful. And I just want to put this behind me.

It was a first time offense, is it likely that I'll get probabtion? Or since I cooperated and confessed, do you think that I'll just get the fine?

I'm really nervous, and can't stop shaking. I can't afford any legal representation, and I'm not sure that I need it for something so minimal...but I don't anything about this kind of stuff, I've never even gotten a speeding ticket. I can't belive I did this.

Also, if it helps any, this was in Nebraska

I had a recent similar situation. I shoplifted something from Wal Mart that was about $10. This is the first time I have ever done anything like this so when they called the police I was freaking out. The didnt write a ticket but they did give me a citation to bring to court. When I went to court I had to pay a fine of $400 which was so expensive becuase it included getting it deffered which will remove it off my record. (I was willing to pay any amount of money to get it off my record and not have anyone know about the incident!) Now I just have to complete this course about shoplifting at home (which costs $65) and then I'm on probation for 6 months but after that it is off my record and I also didnt have to deal with an attorney or anything like that. Well Good luck with your situation!

Just curious.. did you have to pay a civil demand to walmart also? And when you went to court did you plead guilty? ( i'm in a similar situation right now...)

I dont remember them telling me anything about a civil demand so I'm not sure because I know that you typically do. Yes I plead guilty b/c that way I didnt have to further involve anyone and I would still be able to get it off of my record this way

I also stole from ShopKo-some make up totaling about $10 It was a ShopKo store in WI I was given a civil ticket-but i just paid the fine so it is still on my record-i also had to pay a civil demand of $220.02 plus a ticket another person i know also got caught in the make-up section of ShopKo a couple of weeks after i got caught-it was her first offense and she went to court and they gave her 7 hours of community service and she had to attend a 2 hour class (costing $70) and it is off her record forever! One question-are you a juvenile or an adult. And is your court date mandatory?-mine wast-but if you want comm. service you should go-
    Good Luck-Keep me updated

I'm 19. I do have to go to court, no choice in the matter. I'd love to get it off my record...but I don't have $400 to get it off my record.

My court date isn't until august 25th. I'm so nervous, and I hope it's not going to be too expensive.

I am 19 also, but as far as I know paying that much and completing the shoplifting course was the only way for me to get it off my record, but things might be different depending on where you are from. Good Luck!

rach, did you talk to a lawyer? Or how did you know what to do? What to ask for?

because I don't have a clue what I should do...and I can't afford a lawyer...so I was just curious as to how you knew how to handle the situation.
