Default Is it Shoplifting to Exchange Products Yourself at a Store

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I purchased a few veggie packs ($1.99 per each) and some other stuff at my local grocery store. But just before I was going to leave the store, I found out 3 of the veggie packs are almost expired. I tried to get an attention from a cashier to see if I could exchange them but they were all busy. Since I had to go to somewhere, I just picked up those 3 packs from my plastic bag, walked to the veggie section, exchanged them, walked back, put 3 fresh packs in my plastic bag, and I exited the store. No one stopped me or seemed to care. But now I'm worried.

Yeah, I really should've asked them whether I could exchange them or not. I'm worried if they would think that I shoplifted cause I exchanged them without asking it. I went to the same store another day and it was all good though. Should I be worried?

I think it unlikely that there is anything for you to worry about.

However, if the items you paid for were marked down in price and the items you 'exchanged' them for were not, then yes, you were morally wrong.

If the cashier is unable to assist you, you should go to the customer service desk. That's what they are for.

They were the same items with exactly the same price ($1.99) but different expiration dates. Yeah you are absolutely right. I could've gone to the customer service desk. I didn't think about that...

Ok! Thank you for the reply. I feel better now (I'm still unsure what they are gonna do later though. Can they send me police for fresh veggies? I hope I can stop being so paranoid! Sorry )

Another option would have been to get three more and turn the first three over to the cashier when you were checking out.
