My question involves criminal law for the state of: I'm actually Canadian, I know this makes it diffcifult but I really needed advice.
I'm currently 18 and shoplifted a 5$ item out of Winners. No idea what I was thinking, I've never broken the law like that before. I have come out of a stressful time lately with school and I haven't been thinking clearly, and although that isn't an excuse, it's the only reason I can think of. I'm ashamed.
Anyways, I was caught leaving the store. I didn't put up a fuss and went with the LP to a room where a woman was called as a witness. The LP took my ID and address. He told me all about shoplifting charges, and that it was a lot of trouble. He caled the police, he said not to arrest me, but to check if this is my first offence. It is. While waiting the woman talked with me, and the LP asked why an intelligent girl like myself would steal. I said I had no excuse, and I was ashamed.
Upon police arrival they LP spoke with them first. The two cops then came in, confirmed that I had no criminal background. They said I was lucky, the LP wasn't pressing criminal charges, but if receive a "fine" in the mail to pay, and if I didn't py it I'd end up in court. I would also be banned for a year. He said "protect your reputation, don't do this again". The police escorted me out of the store, warned me against ever stealing again, and then left me once I was out. I was never "arrested". Just detained by LP. My question is, is it best to pay this store fine? Will I potentially be charged with criminal activity anyways? Hoe do I handle the situation? Thank you in advance.
