Default What to Do if You Purchase a Stolen Car Through Craigslist

My question involves criminal law for the state of Texas. Ok last month I bought a car from this guy on Craigslist a 2007 BMW for $8500 he wanted $9000. So we came to a agreement of when I bring the $500 that I owe from the $9000 he will give me the title. For the time being he gave me a bill of sale that we both signed to show my proof of purchase of the vehicle. Okay one day I get pulled over I have no insurance on the car yet & the officer runs the vin & tells me the car is stolen. I go to jail for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle & then I bond out & I try to get in touch with the guy I bought the car from but his phone isn't working anymore & that's when it comes to me that I've been scammed out my money with no car. Is it anyone on hear that can help me on how I'm supposed to deal with this my freedom is on the line besides me being hustled. Thanks!

If a car seller cannot produce a title, walk away from the deal. Make sure that he’s got a good title before you plunk down any money. Otherwise, you can end up in a situation like you now find yourself in. Since the seller had no good title to the car, you obtained no title to the car and the car will be returned to the true owner of it — the person who had it before it was stolen. You are out the money you gave the thief unless you can track him down and sue him for it. As for the criminal charges you now face, the only advice I can give you is to get a good criminal defense lawyer to represent you. Unfortunately, that too will cost you money in legal fees.

    Shocking, isn't it?

Another sad story of someone getting scammed on Craigslist. Seems to be a daily occurrence. Although in this case you have no one to blame but yourself. Driving away with a car and no title for it means it's not yours, and you're taking your chances.

This little lesson cost you a lot of money so far with more to come. Hopefully the additional money you shell out for an attorney will be worth it.
