My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Michigan.. I recently moved into a downstairs apartment with water n heat included. We were aware of the upstairs neighbor but were never told there was also another unoccupied apartment upstairs as well. A month ago a tenant moved into that apartment. I received my electric bill and it tripled!!!! After doing some research and shutting everything off in my apartment, it turns out that indeed, Im paying the electrical part of everyone's hot water along with the electrical part of the heat as our heater has a hot water broiler.. Id like to see what other options are out there before I mention this to the landlord and the 1st words out of his mouth will be eviction. He's a slumped, plain and simple! The 1st month here our bathtub was clogged (due to the old pipes) and when we told him that it needed to be fixed he threatened to evict us. The city housing inspector here, puts everything aside and doesn't make the landlord's fix anything and I can highly gaurantee this apartment complex isn't up to code and wouldn't pass an expection.
