Default How to Terminate Parental Guardianship

So technically I am not a minor because I am 19. But I live in VA and I have been having a tough time with my parents trying to control my life (what my career after college will be, where I am going to live, trying to make things as hard as possible so I am forced to do what they want me to do, and what I am going to do basically day to day). I am in college and I want to have no financial ties to them nor do I want anything to do with them having responsibility of me so they can't control what I do. Is there anything I can do to legally be on my own?

Yes. You can walk out the door, rent your own place and pay your own bills. You are an adult - no one can stop you from leaving.

You need to be sure you can support yourself And pay for all of your college expenses before you leave home. Do you have a good full time job ? You might have to drop out of college and go back when you have the money

You should be aware that until you are age 25 (or some other factors apply) you will need your parents cooperation to obtain financial aid...even if you have nothing to do with them at all.

^^^This is true. However, it does not change the fact that as a legal adult, the OP is free to walk out the door and never look back. If s/he wants the comfort and security of living in his/her parents' house and having them pay the bills, s/he gets to follow their rules. If s/he does not want to follow Mom's and Dad's rules, s/he doesn't have to - but s/he gets to support him/herself and pay his/her own expenses.

I know you know this, ll - this is for benefit of the poster.

Omg walk out the door. That's what you can do. You're an adult. You have a choice to leave or to stay. No one can force you to stay.

Don't expect to be able to go back home when you realize you had Not made a wise decision.

Revocation of Parental Guardianship is possible in your state. But before leaving make sure you have good job to take care yourself. As you are under 24, you are eligible to be considered as dependent for federal student aid purposes, unless you marry.

Or he or she might be making an unwise decision to stay there. Either way, this person is 19. If he or she doesn't like the parents, he or she can leave and the parents can't stop him or her.
