    Default Slandered by subordinate employee

I am a supervisor for a clerical team. My Team Leader, who is directly under my supervison, has been telling my program manager and all my other employees that I have been harassing her. She has made a complaint against me saying I am harassing her and saying I am violating her civil rights. She said this simply because called her into my office and asked her what was going on when she took 4 of my employees out of the work area and was gone for an extended amount of time. She immediately started to yell at me (keep in mind, I am her boss) saying "Why are you always accusing me! You are harassing me! I am going to report you for harassement!" I told her that if she felt she was being harassed she is welcome to report me. At that point she left my office and made her phone call to report her claim of harassment.

Since I saw that my team leader was unable to comunicate verbally without shouting, I sent her a very polite email asking what I have done to offend her or why she felt I was harassing her. When she didn't reply, I quitely asked her to respond. At that point she began yelling at me in front of our subornates, "Stop harassing me! You are violating my civil rights!" This woman was totally out of control at that point so I asked her to please exit the area with me so we could talk in private, away from the other employees. She got as far as the door before starting to yell again saying she didn't have to put up with this harassment and that she should just leave. I said, " fine.. there's the door." But she didn't. I just left her alone after that for the rest of the day and reported everything to my program manager.

I have also discovered that she is telling horrible lies about me to our subordinates and asking them to lie for her when my program manager investigates this harrassment claim.

This person had been given disciplinary paperwork twice in the past regarding making racially discrimintory comments, up to a final written warning three months ago. I had just yesterday reported to my program manager a complaint I recieved from another employee regarding my Team Leader making another racially discriminatory comment. Since she had already recieved her final warning for this behavior, by company directive she should have been fired immediately, but because of my program manager is "too busy to deal with this right now" I am stuck with a lying, disrespectful, insubordinate, Team Leader, that is falsely accusing me of harassing her and is trying to get my subordinate to lie for her to support her false accusations. This woman is not only lying about me to my suborninates, damaging my reputation with them along with their respect for me, she is lying to my supervision saying I don't do my job and am harassing her.

For the record - I have been praised just this week by our contract client for increasing production further than ever before, and told by another employee just this morning that I am the best supervisor she ever had and thanked me for helping her grow as a professional. The only complaint I have recieved from any of my employees is that she thinks I act a bit too military and am stern. (I just left the Air Force after 8 years of service - honorably and highly decorated)

My question is: Because my Team Leader is lying about me and telling my supervision and subordinates horrible untruths about my actions at work and my character, is that slander and can I sue?
I feel that my credibility as an professional and as a supervisor has been damaged because of this woman and her lies.
