Default What Happens if You're Caught Shoplifting in a Mall With a Group of Friends

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Colorado

Myself and 4 other friends took a trip to the mall. We first went into Sephora, and I picked out my items. I didn't want to pay the high price for all the items so I shoplifted some and got away with it. My friends all stole some things too. Next, we went to Macy's and decided to work together as a team to shoplift here. I acted as the distraction, one other friend was a lookout, and one friend actually took the merchandise while the two others guarded them. We walked out of there with no issues. We were walking through the mall laughing and chatting when we saw a security guard eyeing us. We figured we were just being too loud so we settled down and entered JC Penney. I didn't steal anything from here but all 4 of my friends did. We decided to go to Victoria's Secret next. My parents do not allow me to wear thongs, so I intended to buy some and sneak them home. I paid for some but stole 3. When myself and my friends were leaving the mall we were approached by a mall Loss Prevention officer. He told us he had seen us steal from various stores and warned us not to run away because he had taken down the license plate number of my friends car which we came there in. So we went with him.

He took us to an office and told us all to place all unpaid merchandise on the table. My friends complied but I gave up everything except the underwear because I knew our parents were going to be called and i didn't want them to know I was trying to defy them behind their back. But the LP agent said "I know you were in Victoria's Secret, so wheres their merchandise? I told him I didn't steal from their. He said he would have to search my bag and I let him because I had them hidden really well. But alas he still found them. Our parents were all called as well as the police, we were all given a court date and we were charged as an "organized theft ring." We were also informed we would each have to pay civil demands, one from each of the stores we shoplifted at. The mall LP banned us all from the mall for 5 years, and we all had our pictures taken.

    1. Will this go on my record?
    2. Can I go back to any of the stores we stole from (not in the mall but other locations?)
    3. Could I be in more trouble for trying to hide stolen merchandise from the LP agent?

    1.) If convicted, yes.
2.) That's entirely up to the stores.
    3.) Yes.

How much will this cost me in total? If I'm not convicted could I still have trouble finding a job?

Well.... let's see. You could be facing felony charges, which makes it harder to get a job. You're also facing civil restitution, attorney fees, court-mandated fines.... maybe even jail time.

Hope the makeup and thongs were worth it.

Wait I could be facing felony charges? How much moneys worth of items would I have had to steal? My parents are also extremely furious and I am currently grounded (only allowed to use the internet for school stuff and my parents are monitoring it and I'm posting this while they're not there and then deleting history afterwards)

Theft of items valued between $1,000 and $20,000 is a Class 4 felony under 18-4-401 (c). You could be facing between 2 and 6 years of jail time and/or fines totaling $2,000 to $500,000.

    Stop stealing.

Do you not learn about what happens when you break the rules? I hope your parents catch you using the Internet for this and ground you from everything and you can just go to school and come home.

Also deleting your history doesn't mean they can't figure out what websites you're on. Especially if they have a monitoring tool on the computer. You think you're pretty smart but you're not.

Stop breaking the law and defying your parents. Otherwise you have a life of jail and prison to look forward to.

It's just one nose ring though, I really don't see why that would cause issues? And could i really go to jail over this?
Are you developmentally delayed or just an entitled brat? Yes you could go to jail over this. You think you can just break the law and get away with it? Your parents may not have known you were stealing and I don't like to blame parents for the actions of kids like you - but you sound extremely entitled and the only way you could become that way is that your parents allowed you and put the idea in your head. I was married to a shithead like you who thinks the world revolves around him and he can break the law and hurt people and never face consequences. He's 35 years old and he has two felonies, several misdemeanors. Four kids he can't take care of (or refuses to) and divorced twice. He started being a little hooligan at 15. That was his first run in with the law. A friend stole alcohol from the gas station and brought it to his house and he drank it with them. Then the kid narced him out when he got caught. He did probation. At 15. At 17 he started doing meth. He's been in and out of two county jails so much the sheriffs know him on sight.

Do you want to end up like this? Do you want to end up a 35 year old loser? Then stop being a moron. Stop breaking the law. Stop acting like you didn't know what you did was wrong. Stop being such a little snot. You're 14 - but grow up. Or you can go to jail and grow up really fast. Even juvenile detention is no walk in the park and you would get eaten alive there.

I see. It's okay for them to know that you're a criminal as long as they don't find out you like thongs.

I knew I was already in deep trouble for stealing so I was trying to prevent getting in more trouble.

What, exactly, are you charged with?
