If he's charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, he should see what dispositions the prosecutor is offering. As a first offender with a clean record, he should be eligible for a 7411 disposition (seventy-four-eleven; MCL 333.7411) which would allow him to avoid a criminal conviction as long as he stays out of trouble during a period of court supervision / probation. If for some reason he's not being offered a 7411 deferral, he should speak with a criminal defense lawyer.
