Default Trespassing on a Trail After Hours

Some teenagers in Missouri were on a trail known as the Zombie Trail, and they didn't realize how late it was getting. By the time they got back to the trail entrance it was after 7:00 and the trail closed at sunset a couple of hours earlier. They were all ticketed for trespassing, but the police told them that they would simply have to pay the tickets and would not have a criminal conviction. Is it true that the tickets won't trigger a criminal record or have possible jail time?
