Default Can a State Garnish Your Wages for Back Taxes After You Move

Can a state garnish your wages for back taxes after you move to another state and take a new job in that state? If so, how can you learn more about the claim for back taxes, or dispute the claim? The person has lived in Florida for a number of years, and has been informed that Connecticut has requested garnishment for taxes owed, but does not know the basis of that claim.

It is possible for a state to seek out-of-state garnishment to enforce a tax debt.

Connecticut's DRS has a reputation for aggressively enforcing back taxes.

The tax warrant should include basic information about the year(s) for which taxes are allegedly due and the amount due for each tax year. The taxpayer should contact Connecticut DRS to determine the basis of the tax assessment -- but if the taxpayer does not have that information they can obtain it from the DRS. With that information the taxpayer can evaluate any available appeal options and, if they decide to pay, may be able to set up a direct payment plan to avoid garnishment.
