Default Can a School Change a Classroom Teacher Without Notifying the Parents

A child attends fourth grade in public school. Without any advance notice, the school replaced the child's teacher. Nobody knows why this was done, and the school won't tell the parents why the change occurred. The child's parents are concerned about the disruption, as well as what might have inspired such a sudden change. Do they have a right to be informed in advance of the change, or told why it occurred?

Default Re: Can a School Change a Classroom Teacher Without Notifying the Parents

Parents do not have a right to advance notice of a school's personnel decisions, including a change of classroom teacher, although it is sensible for a school to provide advance notice when possible so that parents and students are prepared for the change.

There are many reasons why a teacher might suddenly leave and, while the parents might be concerned about possible misconduct, those reasons include quitting to take a different job or to move due to a spouse's new job, a medical crisis affecting the teacher or a member of the teacher's family, or the need to transfer a teacher due to an unexpected staff shortage in another school. Depending upon the reasons for the teacher's departure, the school may not have had advance notice and may be legally or contractually barred from sharing information about the reasons for the teacher's departure.

If a child in the classroom has an IEP, the school should be working with the parent to ensure that the IEP is continued and that the new teacher is qualified to continue the plan.
