Default What to Do if Your Public Defender Doesn't Return Your Calls

A defendant in Maryland is scheduled for a hearing in a criminal case, and has had a lawyer appointed to represent him. Despite several phone calls, the lawyer has not yet called back. What should the defendant do if the lawyer doesn't call him or schedule an appointment before the court date?

The defendant should show up for court. The lawyer should be present and, if they have not yet spoken in person or by phone, should discuss the case on that date prior to the court hearing. Odds are the lawyer will be in touch to arrange a consultation of some sort, even if at the courthouse on the date of the hearing.
