Default What to Do if You're Wanted for Bad Checks

A woman lived in North Dakota for several months, during which time she bounced a number of checks. She has since moved back home to Iowa. She has learned that the police in North Dakota are looking for her about the back checks. What should she do? Should she turn herself in to the police in Iowa?

Unless there is an interstate warrant, which is highly unlikely, the police in Iowa won't be able to do anything for her -- and if there is an interstate warrant she can find herself held in jail pending extradition.

At this point it is possible that charges have not been filed, and it may be possible to avoid charges or get a dismissal by paying restitution.

The woman should work with a criminal defense lawyer in North Dakota to try to resolve the charge, ideally through the payment of restitution; depending upon the amount of money involved and the stage of the investigation or charges, it may be possible for her to get the case resolved without returning to North Dakota, without a criminal record, or both.
