Default Can a Lease Cosigner Veto a Subtenant

A tenant obtained an apartment by having his mother cosign for his lease. Several weeks later, with the landlord's approval, he brought in a roommate as a subtenant. The tenant's mother became upset and told the subtenant that he has to move out. Does a cosigner have any right to overrule the tenant's bringing in a roommate as a subtenant?

Default Re: Can a Cosigner Veto a Subtenant

If she's only a cosigner, not a tenant on the lease, then she has no rights (beyond those relating to the parent-child relationship) -- if the landlord says that the roommate / subtenant is acceptable, then she has no ability to overrule the landlord.

What she might do in the future when asked to cosign for something else, or asked to otherwise help out the kid who is disregarding her wishes, is another story.
