If a California employer is violating the state's "ban the box" law by asking improper questions about dismissed charged, where should you report them?
There is no statewide "ban the box" law in California for private employers, but there are ordinances that impose broader "ban the box" rules in Los Angeles and San Francisco. If the employer is in either of those cities and is in violation of the local ordinances, report them to the city government -- the Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Bureau of Contract Administration, or the San Francisco Office of Labor Standards (OLSE).
For public employers (state and local government agencies), there's a ban the box law, Labor Code Sec. 432.9, but that law has not been extended to private employers.
