Default Supportive Relationship Provisions in a Spousal Support Order

What is the impact of a supportive relationship clause in a spousal support order? Does it mean that alimony ends if the spouse who receives the support payments is in another relationship, where her new partner contributes to her household expenses? Does it effectively mean that if she lives with another person, her alimony will end?

It is important to review the exact language of the order for spousal maintenance to determine when a supportive relationship could trigger an end to the support payments. The gist is that if you enter into another relationship where somebody else is providing for your support, you are unlikely to continue to need spousal support; but the divorce judgment may be more specific as to the threshold point or circumstances that would trigger an end to the support. It would be a good idea to consult your divorce lawyer for advice based upon your plans and the exact language of the order.
