My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York
In November, I moved out of my apartment because I could not stand my roommate anymore but agreed to still pay my half until our lease was up in March. In January, I went to pay rent and there was a $0 balance. Now my former roommate is trying to sue me because I didn't pay January's rent. Can she do that? It's not my fault she paid the entire months rent, she did that on her own accord. I never had any intention of not paying, she just ended up paying it all on her own because I didn't pay exactly on the 1st of the month and she didn't have the extra money so she borrowed it from someone. Now she's trying to sue me so she can get money to pay that person back. Does she even have a case? I don't want to get all worked up and nervous over nothing. Mind you, I've paid over $1300 more than her in rent to begin with so it's not like she's paid more in total for the apartment than me. Any insight is welcome!! Thanks in advance!
