Default Employee Was Inadequately Compensated After Taking On New Work

An employee was asked to take on additional work, the sort of assignment that for most employers would involve a promotion and a significant raise. The employee was told that they would receive a bonus at the end of the year followed by a raise. After working for most of the year under the new job assignment, the employee was given a $150 bonus and has yet to receive a raise. What are the employee's rights?

Unfortunately for the employee, when an employer makes nebulous promises like that, there's nothing that they employee can do. The employee would have a difficult time enforcing an agreement for a bonus but, as small as the bonus was, the employer technically kept that promise. If the employer gives the employee a raise at some future point in time, even of 1 cent per hour (or week), that would technically keep the promise for a raise -- but with nothing in writing, and no firm commitment to a time table or amount, the employer can delay any raise indefinitely.

The employee can try to negotiate a better deal with the employer, but it sounds like their best bet is to dust off their résumé and to start looking for new jobs.
