Default Immigration Through a New Spouse After a Foreign Divorce From a U.S. Citizen

If you are married to a U.S. Citizen, and obtain permanent residency through that spouse, but later divorce while living abroad, is your divorce valid in the United States? The husband lives abroad and is now remarrying, and will file for adjustment of status based upon his new marriage, but is concerned that the USCIS will regard him as already married as his divorce occurred overseas.
