Default Are You Required to Sign a New Lease if Your Landlord Sells the Property

A tenant occupies a rental on a one-year lease, and is half-way through the lease. The landlord just sold the property and the new landlord wants all of the tenants to sign new leases. Does the tenant have to sign a new lease, or does the new buyer have to honor the current lease?

Default Re: Are You Required to Sign a New Lease if Your Landlord Sells the Property

When a property changes ownership through an ordinary sale, unless a provision within the lease agreement provides differently, the lease continues under the new owner.

It is not unusual for tenants to be asked to sign a document indicating that they understand that there has been a change of ownership, and that the new owner is their landlord and should receive their rent payments.
