Hello
My elderly, handicapped MIL has been living with us now for 4 months. Since she cannot work, she is unable to get a ssn. What do we do for insurance? Can we sign her up for Medicare/medicade. What has anyone else done?
Thanks

If she has a green card she should already have an SSN. If she only recently got the green card then its not required for her to be able to work to get her SSN. Unless she has work credits she will not qualify for medicare, and if she is a recent immigrant, sponsored by your husband, then she is not eligible for Medicaid. Your husband will have to get private insurance for her.
So, does she have a green card or not?
Yes, she has a green card. She just received it. I went to the ss office and she mentioned something about a tax id?
Go back to the SS office. The greencard is enough proof to obtain a SS#. If they refuse again, get them to write down exactly why they are refusing. She doesn't need an ITIN (that's basically the tax ID you're referring to).
Ok Thank you, I will try again
