Default Can You Be Demoted and Have Your Wages Reduced

If you are a long-term employee of a company and, for reasons you cannot fully understand, have problems with a new supervisor who keeps finding fault with your work, can you be demoted and have your pay reduced?

Default Re: Can You Be Demoted and Have Your Wages Reduced

In the absence of an employment contract, union contract (collective bargaining agreement) or civil service law (for public employees) that limits the ability of your employer to demote you or reduce your wages, your employer may do so. The wage reduction cannot take you below minimum wage, and cannot be retroactive -- that is, they can't reduce your wages for hours you have already worked -- but they can reduce your wages going forward from the moment that they inform you of the new, lowered wage.

When that happens, your remedy is to seek employment elsewhere.
