In Michigan, a teenager's parents are getting divorced. The teen would prefer to live with a third party, and possibly be adopted, rather than being in the custody of either parent. Can the teenager avoid being placed in the custody of a parent?

Absent an unusual situation in which a third party has standing to seek custody, the court will grant custody to the parents. That may be custody that is shared between the parents, or it may be custody that is primarily with one parent while the other has an order for parenting time (visitation). But the teen doesn't get to choose to live with a non-parent until the teen reaches the age of 18.
